Marty Rice's managerial career got off to a difficult start at Lakeview Park on Tuesday night, as City played Loughgall in the annual pre-season tournament, the Ivan Marshall Trophy. Having had to quickly assemble a squad following his recent installation as new manager, however, it was a usual run-out for the Eagles who were several weeks behind their opponents in terms of preparations.

The game got off to a terrible start for the visitors however, as a misplaced header was punished by Clark to give Loughgall the lead after a minute. Despite a nervy opening, City gradually grew into the game without managing any considerable pressure on 'keeper Robinson, while his opposite number Sean Morgan was to thank for keeping the Championship 1 winners of last season at bay.

Minutes after the upright came to his rescue, Morgan was finally beaten again after 27 minutes when more sloppy play in the City midfield gifted their sharp opponents an easy opportunity which was calmly finished.

Half-time: Loughgall 2-0 Armagh City

The second half got off to an equally miserable start as Andy Moore conceded a penalty and shown a red card for a strong challenge just 9 minutes into the period. Ryan McConville, one of three half-time substitutes, saved the spot kick and made another great save with his legs moments later before finally the pressure told as Loughgall made it 3-0 with a swift move.

The man advantage and superior fitness of the home side really started to become evident at this stage, as City were run ragged but McConville made several good stops to keep the hosts at bay. Three further goals in 10 minutes, however, killed the game completely. City were boosted by the introduction of Shea McGerrigan with 20 minutes remaining, and he threatened the Loughgall goal on a few occasions, while substitute Adam Nesbitt put a slightly brighter look on the performance with a neat finish past Robinson in the last few minutes.

A disappointing result for City, but a useful exercise that should help improve fitness and sharpness in the weeks to come.

City: Morgan (McConville), Cusack, Kerr (McCann), Walker, Moore, Finlay, R. Nesbitt, O'Neill (McGerrigan), Pique, Black (A. Nesbitt), Sturgeon (McGlone).
